Vangaveeti Telugu Movie Review
Intro: Ram Gopal Varma has a track record of successfully recreating the real-life incidents. Be it the 2008 Mumbai Attacks (“The Attacks of 26/11”) or “Killing Veerappan” or Paritala Ravi & Suri’s rivalry against Anantapur faction backdrop (“Raktha Charitra” – 1&2), RGV did a fine job. Ever since he announced a film Vangaveeti on the life and times of slain Kapu leader Vangaveeti Ranga, the film courted several controversies and has been in news. The film created tremors in political circles especially in Vijayawada.

Vangaveeti Radha alias Bus Stand Radha (Sandy) kick starts his life as small-time goon in Vijayawada’s Bustand. Knowing of his activities and collecting grants, Vijayawada’s don Chalasani Venkat Ratnam (Vamsi Nakkanti) summons Radha to meet him at his home. The Radha’s meeting with Chalasani Ratnam is one of the significant in the history as the latter impressed with Radha offers him to join in his gang and asks him to take care of the Bus Stand area.
Soon Bus Stand Radha emerges as a big force. His following, popularity increases. This naturally don’t go down well with Chalasani’s other aides who keeps complaining about his activities. At a point, Chalasani starts believing that Radha is outshining him. He summons him up and Radha turns up so late with his team.
Chalasani Ratnam insults Radha and tries to remind him that he is lower than him. This becomes hot topic in Vijayawada circles. Feeling humiliate, Radha and his batch vows to take revenge. They plans to kill Chalasani Venkat Ratnam. 12 knife-wielding men brutally attacks Chalasani and kills him with 72 knife stabs.
Vijayawada wakes up to the murder of Chalsani. Radha emerges as an alternate force. Radha becomes close to the masses. At the same time, he wipes out all the aides of Chalsani at one go.
Students Devineni Gandhi (Kautilya), Devineni Nehru (Sritej) meets Radha for his help in student elections. They tell Radha about the involvement few old aides of Chalsani. Radha extends his support to them and thus Devinenis respect for Radha grows.
Meanwhile, few comrades of Chalsani hatches to kill Radha to avenge Chalasani’s murder. Radha’s murder again turns sensation in the town. This led to rise of Radha’s younger brother Vangaveeti Ranga (Sandy). Ranga who is already in love with Ratnakumari (Naina Ganguly) initially refuses to take up the responsibility. But later budges to the pressure from Radha’s followers. He takes up the mantle and asks Ratnakumari to stay away from him foreseeing the threats.
But Ratnakumari won’t listen and finally convinces Ranga to marry her with the help of Devineni Gandhi and Nehru. Slowly, Ranga becomes the leader of Vijayawada with no opposition. A national political party approaches Ranga to contest on its party for Assembly and asks him to enter into state politics.
Radha agrees. In between, the rise of student leaders Gandhi, Nehru of student organisation United Independence turn headache for Ranga. Gap widens between Ranga and Gandhi. Although Nehru attempts for patch-up which fails. Gandhi challenges Ranga and starts another student union UCO and starts disturbing Ranga’s supporting unions – auto unions and etc.
Finally, after much thought Ranga gives nod to kill Gandhi upon wife Ratnakumari’s advise. Gandhi is cruelly killed by Ranga’s followers in broad-daylight. While Nehru is in deep shock, Gandhi’s younger brother Devineni Murali (Vamsi Chaganti) is distraught and vows to take revenge on Ranga.
What forms rest is the one-upmanship between two rival groups – Vangaveetis, Devinenis and fight for political power in Vijayawada.
“Vangaveeti” saw finest performances. Flawless, intense and at times subtle expressions make Vangaveeti a best film of this genre in the recent times. RGV recruited the best cast.
Sandy, Naina Ganguly, Vamsi, Sritej have all done justice to their roles. Sandy’s impressive performance as both Radha and Ranga stands out.
